Report: WWE showing interest in two former Lucha Underground champions

How much talent is too much talent?

With the WWE juggling multiple brands, the question becomes how many wrestlers does the company need under their umbrella at a single time? WWE has to fill spots for Raw, SmackDown, NXT, 205 Live as well as various tournaments they hold throughout the year like the Mae Young Classic or the recent United Kingdom Championship Tournament.

In 2018, the indie wrestling scene is thriving like never before but how many free agent signings is too many for the WWE?

From the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter (subscription required and recommended). Dave Meltzer mentions that the WWE has put out feelers for a pair of former Lucha Underground Champions.

“There’s been overtures [from WWE] to Fenix and Pentagon Jr., even though as far as I’ve heard both still have three seasons left on their Lucha Underground deals. But they are two of the key guys on the indie scene right now.”

A mutated mix of a pro wrestling promotion and a weekly TV drama on the El Rey Network, Lucha Underground has seen a ton of gifted performers come through their ranks over the past three years.

Both Fenix and Pentagon Jr. have been key pieces to Lucha Underground’s success and each have held the company’s top championship.

At 27-year-old Fenix has been wrestling as a pro since 2011. In Jan. 2016, Fenix became Lucha Underground’s first triple crown winner when he captured the promotion’s Trios titles with Aero Star and Drago.

A pro since 2010, Pentagon Jr. made news in 2018 when he won the Impact World Championship at April's Redemption pay-per-view. The 33-year-old Pentagon Jr. has also held titles for AAA and won the Pro Wrestling Guerrilla tag team titles with Fenix back in 2017.

Two talented high flyers, and knowing WWE’s history with Lucha Libre masked wrestlers, how would Fenix and Pentagon Jr. fit in the biggest pro wrestling promotion in the world?
