Tottenham & Man United: Shock XIs to start the Premier League season

There’s less than three weeks to go until the 2018-19 Premier League season begins.

However, when the season does kick off, the biggest teams in the division are likely to have significant formation issues to contend with.

That’s because the top Premier League teams all saw their best players competing in the final stages of the 2018 World Cup.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham

Spurs start the new season with an away trip to Newcastle United.

Mauricio Pochettino could field an unfamiliar XI against the Magpies following the World Cup.

Indeed, Spurs had eight players in the semi-finals of the World Cup. Those players were Hugo Lloris, Danny Rose, Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld, Keiran Trippier, Eric Dier, Dele Alli and Harry Kane.

On Kane, the World Cup Golden Boot winner has expressed his desire to play in week one of the new season. Yet the Times suggest that won’t happen:

Kane has a history of being able to regain fitness quickly, especially after injury, but Mauricio Pochettino, the Spurs manager, is also aware that rushing him back without a break could cause problems later in the season.

Accordingly, those eight Spurs players are all likely to miss the Newcastle match on August 11.

That could see Spurs field the following XI against Rafa Benitez’s men.

Manchester United vs Leicester City

The new Premier League season starts on Friday August 10 as Man United play host to Leicester City.

Man United have seven players in the final four of the World Cup this summer.

Those players were Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard, Romelu Lukaku, Ashley Young, Phil Jones and Marouane Fellaini.

All those players are set to miss the Leicester match. So Man United could line up as follows against the Foxes.
