Mathieu Debuchy complains about France’s World Cup victory

While the majority of France is still no doubt overjoyed at winning the 2018 World Cup, former Arsenal and current Saint-Étienne defender Mathieu Debuchy has given quite a bitter interview about his whole World Cup experience.

‘I could have been part of this group’

In an interview with France Football Debuchy stated,

“I could have been part of this group, I had given myself the means but the choices of the coach … We understand them or not, we can not do anything, I missed …

“I do not I have no choice, I moved on. I was happy with the victory but I have a part of disappointment because we think we could have been part of this wonderful adventure.

“There are a few regrets …

False hope

Debuchy was given some hope of joining up with the France squad but that hope was quickly squashed.

“I was called back before the first match because there was a worry (Djibril Sidibé)…”

“It did not go far, I had the idea of being a reservist but when we know that at any time, we can go there, there was a little stress …

Once Frances first match against Australia had passed, Debuchy understood that he would not be travelling to Russia for the World Cup.

“There, it was over … Mentally I did not have too much rest because during two-three weeks, I was in activity.

“It’s like that, there were choices of fact …It’s always difficult to digest.”

France’s road to victory

While Debuchy does not exactly seem happy about France winning the World Cup, their young squad did have an excellent tournament.

France would top their group picking up a 2-1 win over Australia, a 1-0 win over Peru and a 0-0 draw with Denmark.

The Blues would then face Argentina in the round of 16 and would give us one of the games of the tournament, winning 4-3.

France were then quite easily able to beat Uruguay 2-0 in the quarter-final before grinding out a hard-fought 1-0 win over Belgium in the semis.

France met Croatia in the final and despite Luka Modrić’s men giving it their all, France came away 4-2 winners.
